Dudes,
I am looking to create a UK Community for Wooden Surfboard builders. I have been inspired by Rich Blundell & Roy Stewart to name but a few quality builders from around the world. I think there is great potential for these boards to take off in the UK and would welcome any feedback or discussions about this.
Please feel free to comment on anything you see, or would like to ask. As the community grows, so will the knowledge for us all, as best practices are shared, surf breaks, surf trips are documented......the potential is limitless.
Be a part of the growing community, break from the foam blur. The past is the future.

Hi Turtle,
Been looking at building a hollow balsa board, but have been thinking about the surface finish. Would like to have a dark grain finish that stands out, as the standard grade balsa finish can be quite limited. Have you had any experience or thoughts of using a sheet of wooden laminate over the fish bone frame ? Easy now....

Hi Monkey man,
I havent used laminate wood for the decks, for a couple of reasons. One is the weight issue, laminate is quite heave by default, and secondly, shaping the board. When I shape the rails, there is always an element of 'feathering the decks in'. You wouldnt be able to do this. One other reason wood be the flexibility. Not so much longways, more the cross definition.
One way you could introduce darker colours, would be to stain the wood strips, before gluing up the panels. Again, you would need to be careful when applying the resin, as this gets hot and could make the stain run.
This would be a great topic on the Forum, as this only my opinion, and others may have better solutions. Please feel free to add this thread to tips & tricks in the Forum.
Good luck when you do build a board, it is infectious!!
